Our Chorus History

For 40+ years the people of Olympia have been treated to the sounds of woman's barbershop harmony.  On March 29, 1965, Barbara Gehrman and Irene Anderson founded the Olympia Chorus.  Irene was noteworthy in her own right, but also because it was her husband Jack whom she asked to direct the Olympia Sweet Adelines Chorus.

Over the years we have continued to have an active membership between 40 and 60 members.  We won the 1979 regional championship in Regina, Saskatchewan.  In the autumn of that same year the chorus competed in international competition in St. Louis, Missouri.  Since 1984 OSA has placed within the top ten in regional competition and in recent years placing within the top five.

We have the reputation of being a very close-knit group of women who make sure they have a wonderful time while attending to the serious side of learning and improving our craft.  Although our name suggests a particular city, our chorus draws from Mason County, Lewis County and from all over Thurston County of Washington State.

In addition to competition we perform at various venues in the greater Olympia area and put on our own Fall show at South Puget Sound College's Kenneth J. Minnaert Theater for the Arts.
